Oil leak at Hi Low Trans and Rear Diff-Inside tube

Post by milesdzyn »

Found this a while back but was not ready to get parts. I found some leaks inside the main tube members.

As you can see the oil is just below the sensor switch for the Front wheel drive engagement cone, just in front of the Hi Low trans. There is also a leak at the selector cone just behind the front/rear diff. 712.

So if the oil has found its way to the tube do all the o-rings need to be replaced? Cone to diff o-ring, Diff bearing flange o-rings inner and outer. any other seals that may or should be replaced. Also while I've torn the Diffs apart what else should I inspect for wear.

Looking at the parts manual it could be the seal at the selector cone (to the diff) inside the tube, the switch itself, or the seal at the output of the cone.

One of my 4x4 (6x6?) switches was actually oily enough it shorted the swtich giving a false positive all the time. I cleaned it up so the switch worked, but couldn't tell inside where it was coming from either. As much as I HATE leaks. I'm just gonna keep an eye on that one and my fluid levels. Mine is in the front-rear diff too. Too much work to get to that one right now for me.

If I WAS to be doing it, you might as well replace all those o-rings and seals since it will be torn down and they don't really cost anything.

Take lots of pics if you do it!

One or both of the locker box seals is leaking. Check the T-case and front diff fluid levels. You will also want to replace all O-ring seals while your in there.

Thanks for the replys.

Upon further reading I have discovered that when I removed the locker slave cylinders and switch covers to clean them, I removed the thrust bolts as well, which the repair manual says lets oil leak out.
So before I tear apart the Diffs, I will drain the oil out, plug the thrust bold holes and refill to see if there is actually a leak. I guess I should have read the whole repair manual before I removed the locker slaves.

I guess the repair manual is at the top of the list to read and read and read again, all the way through.

So to cap off when removing the locker slaves, do not remove the thrust bolt and if you do have to for further breakdown plug the hole with a stopper / plug.
