High output alternator install

Post by Pinz Enthusiast »

Jim LaGuardia helped me a few weeks ago do a 50 amp alternator swap, the alternator was rebuilt locally for about $160.00 and with Dennis (Linden Engineering's) post I went shopping at NAPA for the extra parts, about $105.00, so had alternator and a few other things and went to Jim's, boy was that a hot & humid day eh Jim.

Well as Jim set about replacing my driver side middle axle stop ring I dissambled the cab and removed old alternator and some of the wiring harness, ( I had new wiring from SAV ) and went about replacing the alternator and the new harness, then on to make up the #8 wire to pass thru the cooling tin to the breaker, and from the breaker to ( this is where I departed from Dennis's instructions ) I ran a long length under the regulator, and thru the bulkhead tru the floor for the lockers and over the tunnel, and under the dash, looped it and back to the regulator, (this loop is for the installation of a ammeter from SAV ) back along the main harness to the starter and hooked it up.

The new alternator bench tested out at 50.5 amps, when running with about all my stuff on the alternator was able to keep up and not kill my batteries, (H4 head lights, 100 watt off road lights, 400 watt alpine amp for stereo and stereo all running) bonus is the rebuild came with seald bearings for smoother operation...

After 3 weeks now it's doing fine a lot less battery drain then before, still have a few gremlins not related to the alternator to work out, was thinking about a small solar panel on the roof to keep the batts topped up all the time as well as a bettery equalizer.

Sounds like good stuff. I guess if you're going to have a stereo in a Pinz you need a 400 Watt Amp.

I've got those same scratch marks in my tunnell foam. Makes me think maybe a squirrell was camping out in there at some point.
