it appears to be Duros in the background! I hadn't heard or seen much on them in the last few years.

In a recent "Military Machines International" magazine, they had pictures of the Duro III at the 2007 DVD Military Show in the UK.
They also had the Duro II on the stand which appears to still be going strong!.....and it LOOKS a lot better than the Pinzgauer II

Dave i think that the rub rail is wider than the usual 716/718 that are seen in GB the tyres are appear chunkier. Still all very subjective, the image is very small but it will sustain some enlargement.

I looked through my part manual, and saw not alternative rub rails offered. Back in '02, the standard tire offered were BFG 255/85 ATs ( yes, ATs) and the 285/75 MTs were optional ( now, the standard fitted). The British Military Pinzes have been fitted with Michelin XZL 8.25x16 ( now renamed as 255/100 x 16).
My 716's has the stock rub rails that are 2" wide ( 51mm), and has XZL 8.25s under it. there is plenty of room for the extra 30mm width of 285 tires. I would hazard a guess that those are BFG 285/75 MTs pictured.
Maybe Greg can get a pic of the tires when he hops the fence ( assuming he doesn't get caught, and a free air ticket to Guantanamo,

Perhaps you are right, but the rails look to me to be wider than 2". The rails on military Pinzgauers here not draw my attention that much. Perhaps my eyes are drawn to the Split Rims so I notice the rails more. I would like Split Rims for my Volvo. It would make changing tyres so much less painful! The tyres in the photo do look more low profile than the metric 9.00 equivalent. So I guess you are correct in your assessment in tyre size.

I do not suppose that the wheels are in the Pinzgauer catalogue though?

Closer inspection well tell all.

Those rims are made by Hutchinson ( found a website in the US for them). Though they do split apart, they are a beadlock ( unless DOT approved, not road legal in the US). IIRC, the Volvo uses an odd 8 bolt lug pattern, and without having custom rims made,you are SOL (Vince can confirm or deny this).
9.00x16 tires woud be an 100% aspect tire ( height 100% of width, and roughly equate to a 285/100x16, assuming Michelin's 8.25x 16 equals 255/100

). The nominal height for 9.00x16 is 36" ( but varies from each manufacturer), and the height for the 285/75x16 BFG MTs is 33.3". Tire sizing can be confusing, as manufacturer will label a tire the closest available equal size. Actual size will vary depending whether mounted or not, rim width, air pressure and vehicle weight on tire.
Maybe a roadtrip up to Reno is in line.......while the authorities are busy hauling Greg off, I can retreive all the info.

If Greg reconsiders jumping the fence, maybe I can find another sacrificial lamb.

I made a mistake I meant the metric equivalent of 8.25x16, 255/100x16 sorry about that not 9.00x16. Its all conjecture till Greg get back from Cuba . If he does not talk give him the water treatment

D'oh!

We drove right through this area day before Christmas didn't see anything! We have rental properties in Carson City. Visited our friends that take care of them for us. Then drove down through 95 to Death Valley & home.

Like Russ I've opted for the side mount too!

I learn't the hard way with the front mounted aircleaner.... I drowned the Pinny twice and I didn't want it to happen a third time!

You should have opted for that RHD 718 that was on UK ebay a couple years back, you wouldn't have needed to modify your air intake.

A 718 is on my wish list Dave, and I have a "few irons in a few fires" but even when I eventually get it, the 712 will remain ..... it's part of the family after all!
