Looking for examples of custom mods for the rear of a Pinz

I posed the question in a previous post about the merits of adding weight to the rear of a Pinz so that it was a bit more stable under braking...particularly on wet pavement.

One of the things I'm considering is fabricating one or several new racks or enclosures for the rear of my 710M that might hold my HiLift jack, one or several jerry cans etc etc.

If anyone has added to or other modified the rear of their Pinz to accomodate these items or a winch, lights or whatever, I'd love for you to post photos of your handy work so I can begin to get some ideas about what folks have done previously.

I have put a spare tire carrier with two Jerry can holders and a hilft jack holder along with a real rear bumper on mine. This set up has worked very well for me. On my 712 the rear door was starting to show signs of wear from carrying the spare on it.

Mike M. - thanks for the photos. I think my welding "guru" and I like what you did with the swing away rear rack with your spare and the jerry cans. If you can PM me a few more photos (when it's convenient), I would really appreciate it.

Speaking of rear ends (?!) I was taking the kids to a new burger joint last night and was motoring along in traffic when suddenly the traffic ahead stopped, I had to REALLY get on the brakes and it was a real handful to stop the Pinz in a straight line quickly. If it had been wet, it would have been a BIG problem. BIG....

I'm hoping that a little weight in the rear is going to help add stability to this rig on the highway.

I pulled out one of my rear bench seats and mounted a second spare. I had the unfortunate luck to have 2 flats in the same day so now I carry an extra spare. It also holds the off-road base for my Hilift jack. On a 712 the lost space is a non issue for me as I don’t carry 12 people back there ever.

It's interesting that you mention the hard braking issue. I happen to be researching Pinzes a bit here lately. Car and Driver magazine in July 1978 said "heavy braking at highway speeds sometimes produces some unpleasant instability".

I was REALLY paying attention so that helped but it was a real eye opener as there was no way it wanted to brake in a straight line all by itself if I hadn't been wrestling it into shape.

Anyway, more weight in the rear would have to be an improvement.

I was just thinking...great place for the chains, in a box of some sort, down low. They will add a considerable bit of weight there rather than in the tool box mid-body.

I built this hi lift jack mount that works with my e-track. The mount can be moved anywhere front to back. Going to paint it when it gets to hot to trailride

When it is all the way forward the seats will function

Pretty neat idea. I love the dirt on the rear seats, looks like mine. Your picture of Box Canyon was nice too.

Thanks for the photo. I have actually mounted my HiLift to that vertical sheet metal section shown in the background of your photo and it allows for the seats to be in either position without having to move the jack.

I'm trying to get as much weight to the very rear of the vehicle, thus my interest in seeing examples of what folks have done with racks and other homemade assemblies for jery cans, spare tires, jacks etc.

I'm repainting my 710M and I plan on leaving the tailgate and side panels off and using the truck as a flatbed for hauling my 600# ATV on camping trips, which should allow for better braking on the highway. of course once the ATV is unloaded I'm back to the light rear end again and need to brake carefully. As I pointed out in a previous post, sudden braking on the freeway with a trailer in tow can be a very exciting experience. Especially at the end of a 6 hr drive.
