Can you adjust the Stop Lamp Switch?

Post by undysworld »

Can you/ how do you adjust the brake light switch mounted on the brake master cyl? My brake lights only come on when the pedal's pretty far down. Can it be adjusted, or do I replace the switch? Thanks.

The switch is not adjustable, and is pressure activated. Check your brake adjustment first. If you have a long pedal travel, it could be needing the shoes adjusted. But the switches will get crud built up over the years and render themself ueseless.

Thanks Dave.

The brakes themselves feel pretty good, nice and firm and not too much pedal movement. But I'm already beginning to brake before the lights come on.

But I'll double check things just to be safe. I haven't checked them in several months. Of course, as you know, my truck's not putting on too many miles of late.... Hopefully THAT changes soon!

Thanks again, Paul

I went through brake light switches like they were going out of style (admittedly I do run silicone brake fluild in all the hydraulics which "may" have affected the switches internal components) but I'm guessing replacing the switch may solve all your problems!

Thanks Peter. That was sort of my assessment too. Paul
