Question for those who have changed to LED's

Post by Heed »

Last Fall, I changed out my brake lights and added some small multi-volt LED turn indicators on the side at the rear (Outside of the bumber bracket on the side). I changed to an electronic flasher unit at the same time as I figured there wouldn't be enough current to turn over the old mechanical relay (...and there wasn't). That install worked great!

I liked the lights so much, that I bought some more to insert inside of the front turn signal housings. I figured that it would still look nice and clean, but I could switch out the bulbs for this epoxy-potted unit and life would be good. I did the install and "life was good"...or so I thought...I figured it would be a pretty straightforward install (forgetting that they never are!).

I guess there is not enough current draw on the system now.

Do I need to add a relay into the mix somewhere?

Sorry...it may seem like a dumb question, but I am "auto-electric challenged"

ooooops...

I forgot to add that the 4-way flashers will work, but a bit dimmer than normal.

The turn signals just stay illuminated and don't trip to the intermittent.

Hello Heed,

I had the same problem and since I am also a bit auto electric/electronic challenged I asked our guys in the german pnzgauer forum for some help and this is the solution they came up with:

http://pinzgauer.kiruna.de/media/robi/P ... relais.pdf

The top schematic is the original Pinzgauer setup and the bottom is the new with electronic flasher and LED blinkers. Sorry it's in german. Everyting will work fine after the change except that the blinker light on the dashboard will not anymore be indicating when the LED is not working anymore like it did previously with normal bulbs (flashing faster).

My electronic blinker relay is a Hella 4AZ 001.879.021

Here is the link to the entire thread (it's in german so use a translator)

Regards and good luck

Thanks Jacques!!

I'll try to locate that relay on this side of "The Pond".

You were certainly right on the purchase of the lights. They are fantastic!

I've had many people comment that the lights look like they were from the factory. They fit perfectly.

Cheers,

Hi Bob,

Glad you love them and so do I. Here is the info about the 2 additional diodes that you need to soder in the wire going to the light bulb in the dashboard, otherwise the lightbulb in the dashboard will not blink either. See the bottom picture of the revised setup for LED blinkers in the PDF file. => 1N4148 High-speed switching diode

If you need any help I can coach you thru it.

Regards,

Jacques
