What's the story on the Red Bull Pinzgauer?

Seeing those photo that Andy shared of the Red Bull Pinz got me thinking about it and its history. Apparently is was being serviced at one time by Fritz's, the Pinz service shop in Victoria, Texas that I mentioned a few months ago. (I've not yet used them but apparently they service a bunch of South Texas Pinzs.) The story I heard was that this rig was way over engineered and rather than being easy, simply and reliable, it was a handful to keep running correctly.

As Mr. Dunn has one of the VERY few legal turbo diesel models in this country, I wonder what the story is on this truck.

If you have knowledge and photos, let's hear the real story (or your version of it at least) behind this rig.

About 2 years ago I saw it at a Red Bull event in Mission Viejo CA. I took some pictures of the tie downs they had welded to the vehicles underside ~ which they did not use, the guy flat bedding it had rapped the axles with straps instead :?:

Anyways, I actually got to move it !

Moving it, I helped push it off the trailer

and over to the parking spot they wanted it in.... apperently the batteries to start it ~ were shot, but the sound system was quite impressive... and it worked well.

it's Trucks
There are several of them. Back in 2000, when I met Erik Purdom, I got to see the early Red Bull RTPT ( Ready To Party Truck ). And my first drive in a Pinz was in a 712M, waiting to be made into a RTPT. Also, I saw the future Mozo 1, painted, and in a bunch of pieces, waiting to be reassembled. In a drive of a RTPT, you could 'feel' the truck wanted to run, but was being held back by all the weight.

Erik designed the trucks for exactly what they were intended for. Flash, and Parties.

Afterall, these were corparate trucks. Impressive enough that pics were on the gallery page of Automotive Technik's web site.

After you got by the fancy metalwork, these Pinzes rode on 8" rims. ( if they didn't originally have) they got EFI. And I am sure Jim can give details of other innovations that were in these trucks, long before many of you had ever heard of" Pinzgauer"

I know Red Bull #2 intimately. WAY TOO INTIMATELY!!!!!!!!!!! Over engineered was not the problem. Let me explain that. The original Pinz was way over engineered. There was a LOT of engineering put in to make the vehicle as close to perfect for the designed job. The Red Bulls had a lot of thought of what was wanted in the new config. The engineering was design as you go. My understanding was some of the later generations of the Red Bulls solved a lot of the problems of the early Bulls. Dave is right a lot of horsepower with a massive amount of weight. Top heavy, but not designed to go off road like I do. For what RB#2 was supposed to do it did it well. And also fed Dennis's pocket well.

Sound system was great! My favorite story was when I took it down to the glass shop. I was jammin to something on the satellite radio when a mustang pulled up. The driver looked and laughed and cranked the tunes (BOOM BOOOM BBBBOOOOOM). I reached overhead to the console and hit the genset start, then hit the button to extend the speakers up from the roof. Then I hit the PA on and cranked the volume up. Counted to 10, turned the pa off and genset off and retracted the speakers. Looked over and the driver of the mustang was slouched down behind the steering wheel. And Oh yeah the driver of the car behind him was lhao (laughing his off). I did tell Tom what I had done so if he got in trouble he could tell Red Bull it was me not him. He laughed and screamed RED BULL attitude.

I think I have a lot of pics of pulling the tcase, air cleaner mod and other stuff on the home computer maybe. If I can find, maybe I can post if anybody is interested. If I don't have, maybe I can contact Dennis and see if they are still on his.

These are the only pics I have. They were in about 2002. The first time I saw the Bull, or worked on it. It came in on a trailer. T case blown up, front yoke gone due to no grease in the u joint. That was when I found out that the vehicle won't run when the 12 vdc system is low. And the genset won't start to charge the 12v batteries because the 12v system is it's power to start. So ya gotta crawl on top of the cooler ( as wide as a set of rear seats and tall enought that at arms length you are trying to hook up batt cables to charge it). Later On I found out how to plug in shore power and charge them.

Here is a little update on the one of the Red Bull Pinzgauers. They have relocated #3 to the Pacific Northwest, however, it is being serviced due to some complications with the VW TDI engine that has been installed. We're still trying to work out the kinks. If you want to take a look at her go to the San Fran Red Bull soapbox race in October or it will be here in Seattle for some time. It will also be at local winter sport events this winter. I dont know where they are all at these days, I believe there are a total of 5 of them in a couple different configurations of them out there. One of which is located in the Orlando/Tampa region. I am still impartial to my Unimog 404s, but the Pinz is starting to grow on me, especially with that turning radius and 6-wheel drive.

I am meeting up with the Red Bull folks tonight (I am not employed with them, just their mechanic), I will ask and see what is going on. My guess is yes, thats why they built these things.

They will have the Pinz based in Colorado at the Soapbox in Denver. Luckily it should be ok because it still has the original engine and none of this TDI garbage.
