Finally

Post by Oberon »

Well as alot of you know I've been having alot of trouble with my rig for a while now. After trying a ton of different things, from putting new valve seals on the heads, to rebuilding the fuel pump and carbs, endlessly looking for vaccum leaks, ect. ect. ect. Well, while trying to get the carbs and timing in order, still not getting anywhere with my engine missing, I set the timing to 7* btdc, and went back to the carbs. I searched the archives for carb tips/problems and tried the suggestion to pull the solenoids off ot the carbs one at a time and pull the idle adjustment screw, then blow about 40 psi through the hole. After that was done, I tried a "cleaning the carbon out" technique by spraying some carb cleaner down the throats of the carbs while the engine is at idle. If you read this particular post, it was mentioned to do this in a very open area due to the smoke. They were definitely not lying. The smoke would pour out and just seem to hang there and was pretty harsh if you got a good whiff of it. I had tried the blowing the air thing when I first started having problems last year with little result and didn't really think the carbon thing would help since I just pulled the heads off to replace the valve seals. When I pulled them, I let them soak in parts cleaner over night, and thouroughly cleaned them with a die grinder with a soft wire brush. Low and behold, took it for a ride and she ran perfect, and has for the last 4 days. I'm a little confused about what I did to get it to finally run good, but I don't really care, its running right. From now on , I'll be practicing the "If its not broke, don't fix it" way of life. I'll be taking it up next sunday to a couple of northern Michigan trails for my first off road session of the year which i know is pretty sad being Sept. and all but oh well. Once again, thanks to all for all of the suggestions on possible places to look for problems.
Thanks again
Spence

When I first joined this forum, I had alwas read "welcome to owning a Pinz" or something close to it. Now I think I get it. It feels awesome to get it running right and even though it took me so long, to know that I fixed it myself. This thing has really given me an education. I'm glad I have an understanding wife. After the counless hours working on it out in the garage, all of my frustration of not getting it right so many times, and quite a few beers while working on it. I'm probably lucky we're not in divorce court. Probalbly helps that she's pregnant but who knows!!
