one carb?

i was wondering if anyone ever thought of using only one carberator, on the engine (with a modified manifold) to get better gas mileage but obviosly way less power, it probably would not work but could some poeple tell me why

There is one Pinzgauer owner (710) in Freiburg Germany that drives a Pinzgauer with only 1 carburator. No real improvement on gas mileage has been noticed though.

Hello

The main reason for multiple carbs is space or power curve. The engine on a pinz has a limited space. A single carb would require a manifold with long runners and would require space for the central runners to equal the length of the outer runners(optimum). Ideally, this would be the manifold of choice, but, again, space is the issue. Engines designed to work better at the low-end have long runners to promote the fuel's suspension in the air. Engines designed to work on the other end of the power-curve rely on the vast volume of air taken in, so they have short runners like a formula-1 engine and nothing provides shorter runners than having the carb right on the head. That is why there is a carb for each cylinder.

I would think it would be better to just install EFI. You see a kit for sale on ebay every now and again.
