Fuel consumption - Mercedes Diesel Conversion

Post by Dreadnought »

I did say I would post honest consumption figures as soon as I had time to gather any. Well today I took my furthest journey in the Pinzgauer. 95% Motorway/Dual Carriageway, I am pretty good at keeping to a set speed (Many years of hauling Large Trucks around Europe) and I chose 80KPH as I hoped that would give the best fuel consumption. Don,t read into this, that she will only do 80KPH, I,m sure she would sit at 100KPH all day quite happily. I havent had time to convert the figures yet from KMs and Litres so even I don,t know how good or bad it is. Before I set off this morning I filled the tank to the bottom of the filler neck, I took the time to let it settle and all the air to escape, I did the same thing when I just got back, at the same filling station, same pump. I drove 520Kms and used 43Litres of diesel. Now for some food....I,m starving!!!!

Diesel fuel usage

Post by Thomas-E »

It looks to me that;

520km=323.1 US miles
43litres=11.36 US gal.
so...

323.1 ÷ 11.36 = 28.44 miles per gallon (US)

WOW :shock: that would be nice, granted that your mileage would go down as you pick-up speed, what a starting point at 50 mph!

Thanks for the info

P.S. I found a great program on the net "Versaverter", a freebie and it is really useful for those of us in the US converting all the Pinz metrics!

Thanks for the 'versaverter' tip, I was hoping for closer to 30MPG but it still is good for a vehicle shaped like a brick. The engine is in very good condition, makes almost no smoke even when cold, and has just had a set of new nozzles in the injectors, so the consumption figure is probably reasonably accurate. I do wonder what MPG the latest Pinzgauers get, with a modern electronically controlled DI Turbo Diesel, offset of course by an auto box and torque converter sapping some MPG.

I can only wish. That is almost twice what I get in my 710 on mpg and over twice what I get with the 712. My max range on the 712 is right at 220 miles per tank. But, it will be that whether it has a load or not, whether it is running at close to 60 mph or whether it is in low and everything is locked in and it is basically idling.

forgot to add the price I paid for the fill up (any of you with weak hearts either take your medication or look away now!) £48.15 I don,t know what todays exchange rate is, but how many of you could not afford to run a Pinz at UK fuel prices? Don,t get me going about left wing governments and their incessant taxes, I think about 85% of UK fuel price is actually tax.

I'll cheer you up a bit. 28.44 MPG(US) converts to 34.16 MPG (UK) :D or 8.27 litres per 100 Kms. My 80 Series LandCruiser Deisel is getting about 12 Litres per 100 Kms :oops: . Going by the brochure I have for the Haflinger it states that it's fuel consumpion is 33-35 MPG. You should be quite happy with that considering the size and weight of your Pinz.

Hey...you are right, I forgot about US gallons being different. 34MPG eh? well I did say that I am very good at keeping to a set speed and they say that it is speeding up and slowing down that eats into the fuel consumption. For anyone who needs the information, I looked at the makers plate on the Gearbox today: Daimler Benz AG (Gaggenau) Bez. G1718 - 5/4
Aggr Nr./Le 711.113 fortl. Nr. 378992 (or Z) (little bit of damage to the plate and I couldn,t read the last numeral. Now I wouldn,t know where to start to find the gearing specs for this gearbox, but I suppose someone out there is a mean detective, as soon as I can I will fit a tachometer so we can get an idea of Engine revolutions at each speed. (The wife has me sorting through the loft all the time now - throwing out old 'car Mechanics Magazines etc - in readiness for our big move next Spring)

There's a lot of space between first and second.

See what I mean about that big gap between crawler(1st) and 2nd, you can use it like a 5 speed box, but you do really feel that gap and have to go to max revs in first, then it feels like there is another big gap, so I think I will go as soon as I can to 8.25x16 XZLs and see if that allows me a bit more flexibility with that 1st gear.

Erik,
You should also point out that his 710's tranfer case ( center dif :wink: ) has gear ratios of .88 in high range, and 1.69 in low. The 716 ( and standard 718) have ratios of 1.061 and 2.452..

BTW, are you to plagraising now, instead of quoting? :roll: That sure looks like on of my past posts... I'm the only one that usually writes 'gasser' and 716/18, instead of 716 / 718 :lol:

Plus all the spelling is correct!

Hi Vince
If it's the same one, they were TD trannies

And their gearing is a lot different than the gassers.

716/18 5 speed

1st 4.25
2nd 2.505
3rd 1.48
4th 1.00
5th .747

710/12

1st 5.33
2nd 3.24
3rd 2.04
4th 1.30
5th 1.00
It's a little different. Search the word Gasser I've been using it for a while. Image

That leads to what I have been advising people for years. The quickest and easiest way to improve the mileage of your vehicle is use Imperial gallons for the calculation. Guaranteed results, first time, every time!!!

Just to chip in with a slight correction.

I have this 711.113 gearbox in my G-Wagen (although it is most commonly out of the Mercedes-Benz T1 Van range) and the ratios are:

1st 4.695
2nd 2.401
3rd 1.436
4th 1.0
5th 0.806
Rev 4.078

Still a big jump from 1st to 2nd though!

The water sealed version of this box (which is actually from the G-Wagen) is the 711.117 while there is also a 711.116 that has a crawler 1st gear of 6.157; a 2nd gear of 3.148 and a 1:1 5th gear.

I hope that this helps.

John
