timing?

Post by dirtgum »

hello all. im new to the pinz world and by no means a mechanic.
i just bought a truck in arizona up in the mountains where the truck was at about 7,500 feet elevation.

now i drove the truck to NJ and im at sea level.

so now the truck is idling very fast or high.

is this a simple timing issue?

can someone on here walk me through adjusting this?

any help is appreciated

It is very simple, do a search in the archive section.
Always read /search archives or repair manual before asking redundent questions as the answers are already there

Sorry, could not resist

ok guys i just read through everything i could find and still have no clue what to do.....

do i need a timing light?

is it definetly the timing i need to adjust? like i said it idled fine at 7500ft and now is idling high at sea level.

can i adjust the distributor by Ear? or am i asking stupid questions?

if i loosen distibutor and just slightly rotate can i just start her up and see if it gets better or worse and adjust accordingly or am i at risk of screwing more things up?

be honest should i just bring it to my mechanic and see if i can get him to look at it?

thanks

First off provide the following info:
Stock or civillian ignition system?
If stock, get a piece of spark plug wire and insert it between the #1 wire and distributor cap so you can use a timing light.
Attach the 12v timing light to the battery with the GROUND CABLE Timing is 3-5mm BTDC for stock, 5-10mm btdc for Pertonix(1 deg= 1mm)(idle speed is 850-950 rpm )
But I doubt timing is the issue. I would be looking at carb adjustments after checking timing.
You will need to check the jet sizes in the carbs(140 for mains at sea level) High altitude jetting is any jet smaller than 140 and can go as small as 120) Small jets at sea level will run leaner and increase idle speeds.
You need to buy a service manual asap.

ok see this is the stuff i need! thank you.

it is stock by the way

carbs is what i was thinking. its gotta be getting to much oxygen now right?

if jets are correct what should i try next?

guy told me jets where correct jets for sea level. now who knows if he has any clue what he is talking about.

he did say that when i got home it would probably be idling high and that i would need to adjust it.

wish you were in NJ jim id just bring it to you........if you want to take a vacation to the jersey anytime soon just let me know! :)

You gotta give Jim a break -- over 1600 posts here, and he can probably count the different subjects on one hand!

We'ed be much better served by ensuring he knows how much we appreicate his (FREE!!!!) expertise (and I've found that supplying a cold one, lunch, or coffee never hurts him either!).

I did take Mark's comments as tongue-in-cheek. LOL.

There is hope though, I believe Jeurgen is still somewhere in Jersey, and he has a manual.
So, You are not alone there 8)
