My new Pinz 710K

Post by spandit »

Got VERY lucky on eBay and landed a superb Pinz 710K for very little money:

Image

The drive home was a little interesting as the brakes were not responsive and there's a lot of play in the steering, but managed not to hurt anything and got back safely.

Nice deal, in our market that sale price would be a steal; I suspect the same your side of the pond. May need a little work but you should be able to invest a fair amount of time and money and still come out ahead.

Wow, parts aren't cheap or widely available, are they?

Welcome Spandit, you have moved up higher than you know, from Landrover world! I did say the driving position takes a bit of getting used to, even to an ex truck driver like me who is used to sitting over the wheels, so play with the tyre pressures before adjusting the steering and give yourself time to get used to it. As for the cost and availability of parts, this also is not a Landrover, in that you don,t need to change half a dozen oil seals after every off-road foray. Once she,s up together, you won,t need parts very often. Now go find some ditches to cross that a Landrover won,t even look at and be very impressed. (Oh and it will tilt much further than you think before it goes over...see my You Tube vid called Pinzgauer Agility.)

Thanks, Dreadnought - there was a huge amount of play in the steering, which was apparent without the tyres moving at all so it needed adjusting out. Since doing it, the steering has been much better.

That isn't your Pinz in the video, is it? If I were in that position I'd be thinking "Wish I hadn't put a spare wheel on the roof"...

I'll find out this weekend!

No not mine, but mine has been over that far and it was OK. If you go on the Big meeting, you will probably meet the owner of that Pinz, it is one of the very much newer diesels.

Tex,

The brakes were dreadful, trust me! I've now cleaned and adjusted them and they're way, way better than they were. Still crappy, you understand, still gives me the stopping distance of an oil tanker (with similar fuel consumption!).

Nigel,

What meeting is this? Better start saving for the fuel now...

Funnily enough the brakes on my 710K are just fine and I was comparing with a Disc braked Unimog, a 69 Landrover Series 2A and a Renault Kangoo Trekka (4 wheel drive and 4 Wheel Disc brakes). I wonder if Nigel serviced and adjusted them before he handed it over to me? either way they are very good. Getting a bit soft feeling now but still plenty of bite, I could bleed them but I fear I might, send my wife through the window if I braked hard.

Looking at the condition of the drums in mine, the brakes haven't been sitting well for a while as some of the rust is quite deep. Have given them a good bleed and hopefully they'll grind the rust off again and get better with another adjust.

I notice you can get reconditioned brake shoes on exchange but then I'd be without any brakes for a while (not that mine are that worn, yet) - are there any other makes that fit?

Hi Spandit. I do an exchange service on brake shoes when you need them, I send a set of relined shoes to you and then you send your old ones back. I just ask that you send the old units back ASAP so I can have them ready for the next customer. Cheers Nigel.

Hi Spandit a big welcome to the Pinz world from me as well.

You will be able to get all your parts from Nigel who seems to work on these trucks 8 days a week.

The Pinzs you see on you tube are a 716 TD and a 710 in sand colour which was mine. I recently sold it and got a 716. The pictures were taken by Dreadnought on Salisbury plain a few months ago before he left these fair isles for a warmer climate.

A couple of us try to get over Salisbury plain on average about every 6 weeks so if you fancy a trip pm me.

A few of us Pinz guys are also going to the War and Peace show in July. Along with the big Pinz meeting in Sept on the 10th 11th 12th

Hope you can make it
