Safety course - Billl Burkes

Post by Jerbearyukon »

Has anyone ever been to one of his courses. I am trying to line up a course here in the Yukon.

A friend of mine was hurt bad a couple of weeks ago in bc when he was winching his jeep up an embankment he went over. I gues the winch cable snapped and it came through the window of the jeep. He was lucky cause the metal sides of the windows stopped most of the force but he was cut by the glass and his arm was lacerated....he's ok.

It got me to thinking that it's been along long time since I have really put much talk into this. I winch all the time and rarely do I check the condition of my cable and now I have bought the rope type and was going to put it on this weekend.

Anyway just wondering if anyone has been to one of his courses.

Seems to know his stuff though.

Jer,
Have never taken his courses but a group I was involved with in WA has done lots with him and they are always pleased.

This is a thread to some discussion of his winch information, maybe something in there that might give you help.

I have known Bill for a very long time. He is a spectacular instructor and has huge amounts of experience offroad. You should feel very confident with him. I would wager he has more hrs offorading than almost anyone in the modern world. He has been called on for military offroad training as well. Great Guy and please tell Him K.C. Carpenter said HI.

PS, he is very big on safety, so you might find him to contradict a few things you might do on a daily basis. Things like counter weighting a truck with a few guys hanging on the side etc.

Has a pretty good dvd out (http://www.4x4books.com/howto.htm) that covers this topic. Will need to re-think not replacing the wire cable on the new winch. Bill endorses Amsteel Blue and this is one reason why . . . But wow are these ropes expensive!
Stuck in the bureaucratic spin cycle!
