Windshield glass

Post by blackstack »

Can someone tell me how to tell if windshield is laminated or tempered glass? The markings on mine are:

Voest Alpine Glas

E2 43 R 001172

DOT 347 AS 1 M 1

I'd assume it's laminated safety glass.

Per this site, it's OK in the US and called Lamisafe by Asahi Glass:

That is a US made laminated windshield. DOT is Dept of Transportation, and the AS1 is the approved glass for use as windshield

Coulde you explain to me how you found that info? I hope you are correct but what I keep seeing is AS 1 cannot be used in windshields ...seems unlikely that they would put that kind of glass in a military vehicle.

I appreciate your help..I hope my request doesn't sound rude I am not much of a wordsmith.

38 years in the glass industry, and I make tinted windshields for Pinzes and Mogs.
Do a search of this forum, I've done a complete breakdown of the legality of auto glass in the US

I didn't look at that the link earlier..... pretty useless to most ( sorry Paul). It is a list of glass manu and the rated autoglass. There are "tons" of other certified autoglass manufacturers.

But if you had found this thread, it should be clearer
Tinting companies and some LEOs will tell you otherwise, but this is the Federal DOT. And as I state there, it's up to an officer descrcction if they enforce them ( IF they truely know the DOT laws and the wording).

If the Pinz's windshield wasn't so short, I'd be tempted to make "shaded" windshields ( dark blue/green band across the top, with the lower shaded... typical of a lot of vehicles)

I found this link that explains the meanings of the various letters marked on the windshield. I was looking for the meaning of the E(sub)2 specifically...the number following the E indicates the country the item was manufactured in, in this case the 2 indicates France

The codes are for the country that the glass is certified by, not neccessarily where it is manufactured.
You don't live in Europe, so the "E" codes don't do a thing for you.
Also some of the European countries had TEMPERED windshields (they still had E codes).... and have always been illegal in the US.
