4WD not engaging

Post by cctjoey »

Pinzgauer newbie here.
1974, 710m

Symptoms:
1. 4WD lever moves 'easier' than the two locker levers.
2. Indicator light does not come on.
3. Front wheels do not appear to dig in.

What is the best way to proceed?

Thank you for your help,
Joey

Is the fluid level adequate in the reservoir? Often engagement problems with the 4x4 and lockers are due to air in the hydraulic system or problems with the slave cylinders/acuators. If air is in the lines, the system will need to be bled. Check for leaks that will allow air into the system. The slave cylinders/acuators may be gummed up with sludge. The system is relatively easy to bleed. The procedure is detailed in the owner's manual, which you'll need.

Joey,

I'd suspect you've got fluid, if the other lockers work. (But check!) Likely a plugged line, but also possible problem at the master or slave. The locker slave for the 4wd is located just ahead of the transfer case, sort of in behind the propeller shaft, on the passenger side of the vehicle. The light switch is just opposite it on the driver side. (Both are on the center tube.)

If you've got no pressure on the lever, I don't know if you'll be able to bleed it properly, but that's where I'd start. Generally speaking, when the line is plugged and you lift the lever, the master cyl will take in fluid from the reservoir, thus making the lever impossible to depress, not easier to depress. My gut guess is a problem at the master cylinder.
