I suppose I should reitroduce myself, I joined up about 2 years ago. I had already been looking for a pinz for a while by then. I just picked up Shawn's 710K and can't wait to get out and get it dirty.

I want to swap the 2.7 and go propane, or swap in a yanmar two liter diesel that has slightly better power and I hope fuel econ, but for now I'm content taking friends out and invading the local burger joint

You acquired Sean Pattee's 710"S"? I remember looking at a series of photos of it and the truck looked very clean with a bunch of interesting modifications.

I know how difficult it is swapping, as I've seen how many have started and just went back to stock.

If it works there will be plenty of pics, whether I go propane or diesel.

Me too, I'm doing research on what diesel to go with, important considerations are....

Weight, The pinz is already front weight biased.
Size, I'd rather not cut up a 40 year old vehicle, if things go wrong I can go back to stock.
Power/Torque, I'd like to stay with similar power +50% or so to keep the drive line happy, no use for extra power if I'm breaking axles.
Displacement, It seems to be the common denominator that even if power numbers are the same, if the diesel swap has less displacement it's going to be a dog.

Currently the front runner is the OM617 or one of its derivatives, Fits most categories, but I don't know size or weight, although it is a 5 cylinder so it should be similar in size and not terribly much more in weight. My biggest worry is height.


If I pull the trigger on the swap it will be well documented, my other hobby is photography, I also have a friend who is already making adapter plates in the Subaru community, so I will hopefully be able to organize a conversion kit if it ends up being worth it in the long run.

It's not perfect as is but when I hear about plans that folks plan to make to them with diesel engines, disk brakes etc etc, I just keep thinking that perhaps going with a Defender or a Wranger seems like it's going to be a bunch less trouble that trying to reinvent the Pinzgauer.

Perhaps I'm channeling jealousy. I don't have the skills (or time or interest) in trying to reinvent a vehicle that seemingly works just fine the way it is but if you are successful in changing out the engine and then the brakes and then whatever else, do take lots of photos!

I'm with you on the whole why bother reinventing the wheel instead of just getting something else, and half of me says Keep It Stock Stupid!!, but the other half of me is itching for customization.

If I do keep it stock I'll be using it as a trade in once the TD's make it over here in enough numbers that they aren't so cost prohibitive.
