Engine oil! Should we be using motorcycle or diesel oil?

Post by VinceAtReal4x4s »

Since it's from a good source, I thought posting here would be helpful. It's a lot of reading!

A lot of this article has to do with air-cooled engines. The new oils look to be a growing problem for anyone into older cars.

Quick summary: New oils have reduced levels of specific components that seem to wear out flat tappet cams fast. This is magnified in the break in period. Oils for diesel engines and Redline oils seem to work best. Valvoline makes a version (VTX-1 i think) that also contains the necessary components.

This article is about 6 years old so many of the oils stated may no longer contain the components.

Looks like i will convert over to Amsoil diesel engine oil on my late model Mini. Might do the same on the Pinz

I remember the Ranger, it was one of the better Kit car 'Mini Moke' alikes...rare now even in UK, lived there most of my life until last year, was heavily into the car show scene and maybe saw two in all that time. I may even have some handouts from the company that made them.....I,ll look them out if I get the chance, (just started snowing here and I have to get the chains on the pinz) I just remembered, the Austin America was what we called the Austin 1100/1300.....funnily enough I was recently looking at a You Tube video of a Van Den Plas Princess version of the 1300....apparently they are very popular in Japan as a small retromobile. Thanks for the info.
