Diagnose The Problem

Post by ExpeditionImports »

So I received a call from a customer today. They were doing a little maintenance on their vehicle and asked what the oil capacity was on the engine. I told him to start checking it after 5 quarts and went about my way. I did mention to him not to overfill.

I received a call back about 3 hours later. He had drained the oil, and added 3 quarts. The oil was 1" over the top fill mark. I confirmed that he was sure how much he had added and he was.

Considering this, I advised him to drain all the oil and confirm that the oil drain plug was clear of any debris.

A call back twenty minutes later to tell me that he drained it a second time and only got a little dribble. Inserted his finger in and could not find any problems of note.

So what is the diagnosis?

Cheers,

Bingo.......

Customer mistook the differential drain plug for the engine drain plug. Drained the diff, overfilled the engine. Since he drained the diff there was nothing more to drain the second time around!

After explaining it to him he felt a little bit embarrassed!
