Can you have a listen please

Post by Jerbearyukon »

And make a suggestion to whether it's the header pipe leaking (needgin gaskets)...or the valves that need adjusting (and new gaskets for the valve covers) or both. This noise has come on fairly suddenly....never made this much racket before. Just changed the oil so it`s topped up ok.

Just need to know what to order I guess and I thought with your guys experience it would make things a bjt easier

Thanks

Not a ton of experience with Pinz's but I'd definitely put a screw drive to my ear and onto the rocker covers. If these were hydraulic lifter motors, I'd say you have low oil pressure. Since they don't, I'll bet an adjuster jam nut loosened and you have a lot of clearance all of a sudden as you described.

I say no if the adj nut has backed off you will have to much space and it could mushroom the head of the valve.

you need to find the source of the noise. Excessive valve clearance can damage the pushrods(they are aluminum with steel ends). I have replaced a few "short" and bent pushrods.
If the valve lash is good, check oil pressure with a manual gage.

I can't tell from the sound of the video, but it might be a loose spark plug or possibly a loose head? Could that be that I hear air "puffing" out? Take a couple feet of hose and put one end in your ear and move the other end around and see if you can localize the sound.

thanks guys..I am no mechanic...is it easy to set the valves....do you do it cold or warm. I have never adjusted them and it has 87kms on her...would it be around that time to do that anyway.

I will look in the manual..Just don't want to screw something up worse than it is. I have a friend who is a mechanic but he can't help until later next week...

thanks again

SO I did the valve adjust and while I was ripping her appart I found some stuff. I have put sea foam in the gas and some in the oil and took her for a run afterwards too.

SO two of the cylinders needed adjusting....I found top dead center buy inserting a screw driver into the spark plug hole and rotating the fan by hand (hope this is ok).

The back cylinder was the worst and when I took the valve cover off there was oil in there kinda like the oil that is in the filler cap when you add oil and it's cold...real thick white crap....the rest were ok though.

I noticed that there was a bit of oil on top of the carbs see pic:

Image

and when I took the breather off there was oil in the rubber fitting that links the breather with the filter...see pics

Image

Image

There was oil around the outside of the carbs too...

Image

So I cleaned everything up....this happened before but it was the air filter...but there is light coming through it so I don't know what's up.

more next;

This is the plug that came out of the first cylinder...I just replaced them all after gapping them at .030

heres the first valve setup:

None were loose and it making the same noise so I am thinking it's the exhaust manifold gaskets.....pretty loud inside the truck right now.

I backed out the four screws on the carb a half turn too so it wasn't runnikng so rich (hope that's the right way).

anyway I will talk to Karl tomorrow and see what he thinks....I am all ears...well kinds..tee hee

Be careful of backing those screws out. Small turns make big differences. I'd put them back to where they were.

The oil foam in #4 and residue in the intake is normal. It's part of the recirculating system.

Are you running short trips and not really getting it up to temp? May want to get her good and warm - drive for a straight hour and boil out some moisture.

The plugs look fouled but not horrific. Could be left over from before you had your carbs worked on.

I changed them after the work was done...it was runing rich and terrible so I set them to factory settings and it was running better but not great but I thought for the winter it would be ok....I will run them for a week and seee the plugs after that

So I started it up this morning here are some videos...I think I have an exhaust manifold leak (gaskets).

I have done the valves and added the sea foam (and I turned the 4 screws out on the carbs one half turn to lean them out a bit) ...this is a cold start>

Really smokey but it was to be expected with the sea foam right.

Image

this is after a 1o km warm up and choke off.

Image

she's idling pretty fasy..never touched the idle screws though...just the four screws for the leaning....it was running real rich before this ok

Sorry GUYS just trying to figure it all out

Thanks

So Karl is thinking she's running on 3 cylinders - we are going to do a compression check tomorrow and check out the spark plug leads too.
