Gama Goat???

Post by bonefish635 »

Anyone seen one of these before? Seems to have drive to the axle in the trailer, if that is a trailer.

'K' suffix registration would make it about 1972?

they're 6x6 with a Detroit Diesel that'll make a Pinz seem quiet. iifrc, the front and rear axles both steer

yep front and rear steer and that is no trailer it is part of the vehicle, just articulates. A beast to maintain. The design was not friendly to the day to day routine maintenance needed. Getting into and out of one takes some agility. The noise level is off the charts but the cool factor is pretty high. There were plenty of them destroyed in driving accidents by soldiers that were not familiar with or heed the warnings they were given in the driving classes that became mandatory for the operators.

I drove one of them when I was in the Army. Honestly I spent more time in the motorpool working on it then driving it. And yes they are load as hell and would be easy to flip if not driving slow. I would never want to take one on modern roads, even if it did highway speeds (which it does not).
Now to have one to trailer to military shows, that would be cool if that was someones thing.

I can remember the first time I saw one (or should I say heard one). Was sitting at an outside cafe and wondering what on earth was making all the noise. A little bit later a Gamma Goat went by on the road doing about 45mph. I swear you could hear it coming from over a quarter mile away. That got me looking into them. Spent some time talking to people who drove them and had them. Definitely a cool vehicle but man they really did not have lots of good things to say about it as a vehicle. If you were lucky enough to get one that would pump water out faster than it came in, they were fun to go into the water with but very slow when they were in the water.

I was always interested in them also, just not enough good about them to have another "place taker".My Supacats are big enough, and a lot more flexible in use. I'll be starting a thread on my latest acquisition, though I may not see it for months.
