Exchanger flange cracking...

Post by berger »

I noticed the other day that I have a crack in the lower of the rear most pipes coming from the exchanger...right at the flange where it connects to the muffler...

Can this two-pipe piece be removed from the exchanger for repair, or does the whole exchanger need to be replaced once these things go? I was thinking of welding on a collar of some sort.

In tracing why this started to crack, it seems the exchanger is help up by wire, front and back, and the mount on top is not connected. Appears that the studs coming from the exchanger aren't there.

we have seen the studs in the exchanger fail. In most cases we just weld the studs back in place and reconnect. Never seen anyone use wire to hang it up but I guess for a trail repair it would work. In any case the exchanger has to come out and the studs repaired along with the crack. Should not be too much stress on those pipes if all is in good order.

Well, the cracks started to worsen because the wire just wasn't cutting it. I made up my own hanger for the exchanger by tapping the holes already there (M12x1.5) and inserting a stud. It was hard getting the nuts onto the studs in the hanger, but they finally went on. The exchanger and muffler are now solid!
