To anyone else this side of the Atlantic, it only cost $60 to ship the starter from the US. Much less than I feared.

I'll keep you posted with the replacement process. My suspicion is that the huge shower of sparks I created whilst removing the starter power lead might have had a teeny weeny negative effect on the electrical system. I vaporised a chunk out of a 1/4" ratchet spanner in the process, and could hear The Carpenters Greatest Hits in my left ear for several hours afterwards, even when in the bath.

Success. Gear reduction starter fitted. Much easier to refit than the original (as promised). A pleasant surprise was that the shower of sparks last time when I shorted the power lead to the starter against the body with a spanner didn't actually do any harm to the electrics or fuses.

I just bolted everything back on and she started right up.
