Tire pressure

Post by Kiwibru »

Just wondering what pressure readings others use for on highway and off-highway use. I find my rears seem to like 48psi (Max. 60 tires) and around 43 front. Much more seems to beat the chassis a bit because the tires are so stiff.

Please let us know what tires you are running. Tire pressure varies greatly from tire to tire. On my supper swamper LTB’s I run 30 in the front 20 in the rear for street use and 12 in the front 8 in the rear off road . These tires are bias ply and have extremely stiff sidewalls.

With 285/75R16 BFG AT KO's on STOCK RIMS (no tube, no safety bead) I run 40psi on the highway and 18psi off road in my 710M. Haven't lost a bead yet (knock on wood :D )

With SIMEX ET's (just like "hairy" swampers :D ) on standard Pinzgauer rims, but fitted with beadlocks, I run:

ROAD:
Front 38 PSI, Rear 28 PSI

OFF ROAD:
Front 21 PSI, Rear 8-9 PSI

wait...what?!! freakin' tire question again???!!!!

Post by Protoman333 »

sheese, now im dragging up threads from back in december...sorry!

but i was just searching for information, reviews, etc on 34" swamper ltb's (im getting ready to purchase and just wanted to make sure no one had any rubbnig issues) and ran across this thread which stated something ive not seen before...

what the heck is going on with people running lower tire pressures on the back than on the front?!?!?!

i thought that the same tire pressure was required in all tires to consistently maintain (roughly) the same diameter and general drag/frictional force so that the entire drive train wasnt unnecessarily stressed. i dont know if that made sense. what i mean is if im running 30psig on one side of a diff, im not going to run 50psig on the other, and i had always assumed that to be the same from front to rear in a pinz.

tire pressure

Post by krick3tt »

The pinz came with a tyre gauge that reads in BAR so I thought I would use that one. 2.4 bar front and back for the road. (14.5 lb = 1 bar), but my Stauns are set for 14 lb for off road. Running BFG mud terrains, 255x16.
I was filling them up to almost 50 for road use but the ride was too hard.

I was figuring my mpg this weekend and noticed that at 72kph I am traveling 50mph, not 44mph. The difference in the BFG to Mayola is about 8% based on that. I am going farther than I think. I know the spedo is not very accurate, but this alleged speed is based on a previous road trip that seemed to have some truth to it.

Cheers,
Morris

If you think about it, the tire tread is like a belt -- it is the same length whether is is round or oval. So the difference in pressure does not contribute much to the circumference. This is why the new cars with "tire pressure monitoring" can barely tell a tire with lost air from the ABS rotation sensor, there is just not alot of difference, so that is why so many cars use true tire pressure sensors instead.

Besides, off road where you are going to get lots of tire slip anyway it doesn't matter. :)

I have been runing the 34" LTB's for a few months now and 2 Moab trips with no rubbing at all. Over all I have liked them. A bit ruff on the road at certin speeds but I am not sure if that is a balancing issue. I lost a bead the other last weekend at Moab but it was a sinch to put back on the weel because they are so stiff.

The warantee has been worth it from 4 wheel parts. I have already replace one tire from a side wall slit that has paid for the warnaty already.

If I don't air up from being on the trail I can't even get to 45MPH. Its a gutless wounder with low presure. 40 psi on road and 10-15 off. Bead Locks would be nice...

hey, thanks for the feedback from everyone! and i got two questions lined out with one post. no rubbing on the 34 ltb's and apparently on road tire pressure doesnt matter that much, or at least i didnt see anyone chime in differently! im still not comfortable with mine being off more than a pound or two, but glad to hear its not as critical as i have been with it...

STPPINZ/TurboJim: ive had to drive mine for about 30 miles at 20 psig and i had a he!l of a time keeping it at 50, but a dang fine ride for a pinz! probably the smoothest ever.

and as far as balance goes, im going to use the balancing media that was recommended from this forum (http://www.innovativebalancing.com/index.html). just got them in the mail the other day, man are those beads small! no wonder they want you to buy the filler thingy and the filtered valve cores!

thanks again,
Chris

With my 710 and BFG Muds I had no problem reaching speeds either with low PSI. Maybe it is just the more agressive tires with the 712 grag?
