Eberspacher BN4 heater replacement

Post by Ken A »

My Eberspacher BN4 heater has a heat exchanger failure. I purchased one of the Benmar/Perfection 20,000btu units off Ebay as a replacement.

After documenting the wiring of the old unit, I carefully removed the old heater. I can easly mount the replacement and fab up any air duct adapters. I do plan on adding outlets to it so as to get some heat into the cab area.

My question is: Does any one know if the OEM heater fuel pump (mounted just behind and below the BN4) can be used with the Benmar/Perfection unit?

What have other owners done to complete this replacement ? (I know that I can’t be the first)

Any information would be appreciated.

I have a new Webasto 3500 in my Pinzgauer now (LOVE it) as like your BN4, mine also suffered from corrosion in the combustion chamber.

For nearly 30 years, I have had a BN2 in one of my Haflingers, and about 20 years ago the original fuel pump "spat the dummy", so I replaced it with a small solid state fuel pump ..... the type that looks like a small electrical transformer.
In my case, it's been happily chugging along ever since without any problems.

I have replaced my engine’s mechanical fuel pump with a solid state one designed for aircraft and have been very happy (less cost than a rebuild kit).

I can do the same here but if I don’t need too I would rather not. Just one more thing to rig.

Thanks for the feedback.
