worn carburetor spindle shafts

Post by Boelt63A »

After learning a whole lot about carbuerator adjustment, float levels, timing and fouled spark plugs; I think I have found the bane of my carbuerator problems. the spindle shaft moves at least a milimeter when I wiggle it on both of the carbs.

I can only assume that this is excessive.

Before I tear the carbs off the throttle bodies can anyone give me a gauge as to how much is too much?

And if I do tear it down to the throttle bodie what would "spec" be for the hole diameter?

Jake I can't wait to get that EFI kit, and put all this behind me!!

For info there should be no lift whatsoever but the spindle must not bind in the housing either. The ends of each spindle are sealed with O rings on later models. On earlier housings I machine a step in the housing to accept an O ring.

Build Condition 1. Early housing had brass spindles and were the sacrificial part.

Build Condition 2. Steel spindles introduced and inclusion of "O" ring step.

Build condition 3. Housings machined out and oversized spindles used.
I have only seen three carburetor sets with O/S spindles.
(Swiss Army probably liked changing the base as a complete unit.)

Tip: If you have an early set merely changing the spindles for some new steel units will probaly fix the problem. If you have later units SAV had O/S spindles available. Just be careful who you entrust to line bore the housing(s). Few machine shops the right length reamers to line cut the hole correctly.

The carby is a simple thing to fix, believe me FIE contretemps can cause you alot of trouble when they play up.

Dennis,

Thank you for the info.
Even when I get the EFI kit I will keep the carbs handy. Being an old soldier I know KISS always works when things get down and dirty. Hence, my never ending quest to get these carbs right.

Thanks again
