Hydraulic winch

Post by Oberon »

Just wondering if anyone runs a hydraulic winch. I am looking install a winch soon and I've come across quite a few people and websites that say that a hydraulic winch is much more reliable than an electric. Just wondering if anyone has one and how they installed it. I found a forum online awhile back where a guy was trying to install a PTO and a pump to run a winch but said that it was getting very expensive. Just wondering if anyone had any input.

I would have to agree that a hydraulic winch would be more reliable,
however, the Pinz has no place for a PTO and I doubt that a belt driven
pump (on the engine) would be able to develop the necessary pressure.

Since the pinzgauer doesn’t have a power steering pump you have to install an electric 24 volt pump to power the winch like you said. So in the end it’s still electric just much more complicated with all the complexity of an electric and a hydraulic combined. I don’t see the advantage unless you plan on installing power steering and running the winch off that. I run a 9000# milemarker electric and no problems yet.

I run the SE 9500. It’s inexpensive and available in 24 volt. It also has a standard 10” X 4.5” mounting pattern so if it ever blows most any winch will fit my bumper.

I did look at running a Hydraulic MileMarker unit some years ago when I fitted Power Steering, but I wasn't convinced that using the PS hydraulics was the best, safest and most viable option.
Instead I opted for a Warn low mount, but maybe one day when I see a cheap "in need of restoration" hydraulic unit I might change my mind

It's interesting that a hydraulic winch is listed (they have a pic of it also) as an option in the original Pinzgauer brochures yet in all my years of talking to owners etc I have never heard of one actually fitted!

I'm pretty new to the world of winches, and Pinz's for that matter. I've noticed that milemarker winches tend to be less expensive than say a Warn or a Ramsey(I've been told by several people to stay away from Ramsey winches, I haven't heard good things) but anyway, I kinda figure that Milemarker winches must be pretty reliable if the US military runs them on their rigs. Any opinions?

Actually there are 2 locations for a PTO, the trans mount is attached to the pto cover , making that useless, but also a provision was made for a pto on the back of the T case.... but you'd have better luck finding hen's teeth on the web first.

The Pink Cow had a hydraulic winch when I got it. It was the first thing to go, along with all the hoses, tank, pump and wires. I also didn't want it mistaken for a Land Rover with the leaks  .

Remember that hydraulic needs the engine running to work (unless you have an electric pump. then what's the point, another system to fail  ). I prefer electric, easier to install and maintain. But you are electrically challenged in a Pinz ( I should say 710/12  ) , almost anything added to the system puts it into a drain.
