Plastic NATO Water Can (20 L)
Is there such a thing? I found a NATO fuel can in plastic at a local surplus store, but they were used and smelled of fuel. A couple years ago, I bought a metal NATO water can as I like to keep a permanent water supply in the pinz as I drive it in some remote areas of the desert. After about 6 to 8 mos. I checked my water and it was all rusty and foul! I filled it with reverse osmosis filtered water. So now I am inclined to go with plastic. I realize the hot wx out here probably has something to do with the disintegration of the liner on the metal NATO can, but was none to happy with how quickly it wore out on such an expensive piece of equipment. I realize I will probably have a plasticky taste if I use a plastic can, but it beats rust. Reason I want to keep with NATO foot print is that I already have a NATO can mount permanently mounted in the rear-most compartment lying flat directly on top of the right rear wheel well (so as to keep the CG nice and low).
I am open to other suggestions and don't have to mount it in my NATO mount. I can always mount another Jerry (Gas) can in there.
Any hints on long term water storage in the pinz, in the desert?
Any suggestions are appreciated!

I have a water can on the rear of the Pink Cow. Blue indicates water, and they are lined.

This is where I've gotten them.

Probably not the cheapest, but I believe in supporting small companies , and these are good people to deal with.

The Nato and US plastic water jerry cans should fit in the same footprint. The US ones ($30-$40) I've seen are Tan in color with water embossed on the sides, There is also a thermal cover ($25-$40)which is very heavy duty that is ment to fit the plastic water can into for desert situations.

Another option is this Stainless steel jerry can:

And a third option is Aervoid thermal coolers available in 3, 5, 10 gallon sizes.

Thanks Dave. Ah yes, I couldn't remember who I bought mine from. It was British Pacific. The lining gave way and the water intereacted with the metal beneath and wah-lah.....rust. I guess its the extreme heat out her in AZ.David Dunn wrote:I have a water can on the rear of the Pink Cow. Blue indicates water, and they are lined.

Sam....The plastic jerry cans can be found at most military surplus stores, you can find them on ebay but the shipping is a killer due to bulk of items.
Todds112....There are two diffrent nalgen materials used in their bottles. The lexan bottles should not transfer taste, but their bottles made of polyethelene? does. If you want something to not transfer taste try the Sigg line of water bottles.
ProfPinz...sent you a PM

The plastic water jugs are available from ISO down in Florida. Check this link- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Military ... enameZWD1V
These are new and much cheeper than I found at surplus stores. I have never used mine yet so I can not say if it will add a funny taste to the water but the quality is great.
Good Luck

Maybe you could turn them into stainless steel Mufflers ... they could look appropriate on a military vehicle!$150 polished stainless steel ones
