Rub rail screws spinning in the threaded insert.

Post by Twin Pinzies »

I'm in the process of refinishing the wooden rub rails. Most screws come out, but a few on each side just spin together with insert. How do you suggest getting the rub rails off? I was thinking of running a hacksaw blade behind the rails and just saw off the bolts studs. Then using an easy-out to get the studs out. What do you guys think?

Drill the heads off and then you want to spray some penetrant on the THREADS ONLY. Next put 3 washers followed by a nut, hold the cut end of the screw with visegripsand tighten the nut against the washers, this will resize and lock the nutsert back down, loosen the nut and remove the screw with visegrips
If that does not work, cut the srew flush and drill out the nutsert and replace it.

Thanks Jim. That seems like a better way to go. I'll get on it tomorrow.
