Hazardous activities

Post by lindenengineering »

Well you blokes here I am harping on about those old Espar heaters again and the lengths some of you folks will go to to save a buck!.

The attachment tells a thousand words. What it doesn't say is that one of our guys got light headed in the cab after a few minutes in this 710K changing the oil. Carbon monoxide poisoning is real!
This little beauty cost about $10.00 to jury rig but it prompts the question; How much do funerals cost?
He even hauls his young kids in this, words fail me!

I don't think it's about keeping the old espars going so much as doing it the right way. I personally like older equipment, built much better and user servicable. After all were all a little nuts for buying and fixing 34 year old ex military vehicals. :D I've seen some very well maintaind espars that run like new, though the original pipes were prone to rust and need to be coated.

I like to think of myself as being just a little eccentric.

What I didn't post is the fact that the combustion chamber is corroded through as well!
That renders the unit scrap unless you want to spend a huge amount of time and money TRYING to cobble the thing together to stay warm.

Remember fannying around with these things without adequate competance as depicted at its simplest form in the photos or checking to see if CO is present in the cab can result in loss of conciousness. That on the road means an accident with other road users most likely being involved. Fixing old stuff is one thing, being a menace to fellow citizens is something quite different. Unfortunately its the emergency services that have the unpleasant job of dealing with this sort of stuff. If you have ever smelt burnt human flesh its a smell you will never forget.

The post is meant to be a warning when fixing old crap that is best destined for the junk yard. Last week we repaired a BN4 at the owners insistance. Time and materials would have purchased him a new Webasto or Espar for that matter. Something that is infinately safer and more economical to run.

I must put in my two cents worth on this subject.

I replaced my Espar with a diesel Webasto I purchased from Dennis. The
old Espar worked well enough, but I was just apprehensive about having
a potential bomb behind my seat.

Also, there are some real benefits with a new heater, the best is that you
can have a nice warm truck in the morning with the optional timer/thermostat.

Time bomb just about sums it up!

We have had several "BN4 oldies" go up in flames or fume you out of the cab during a repair. John (lighteningpinz) these days always has a fire extinguisher at the ready after a scare several years ago.

I have mentioned this before but fire scares the crap out of me (like Swiss neatness.) Since the Pinzgauer will take you to some very remote parts in the world, the last thing you want is a BN4 flame up where there's no help. Its a long walk when you are dead looking for help.
Take care
