Post by ka »

does anyone know of a place in salt lake city where i can go to get this truck tuned up enough to pass emissions? it smokes a bit at idle. i thought that was supposed to be normal. no?

i would assume so here. how else could anyone register one here?

i passed safety with my crazy garage parts stash leggo brake switch!

i just learned from dennis williams the jets in these carbs are likely 140's (it's from san diego) and i need 125's here at 4000 ft.

Here is Wisconsin when I "could" drive my truck on the road it passed emissions. It was a basic idle check only. there was no way to put it on the dino tester due to the axle issue. Then they looked to see if I had a gas cap. Done, and it passed twice since I have had it.

jets

just a bit of recent experiance to pass on... i just had a set of pistons and rings installed in my 710 and the differance was so great! before the new top end i smoked and used oil as if i owned an oil well. with the new top end i can let the little beast sit and idle for as long as my paitence wil alow and no no smoke and no oil use. when the job was done we found some really big jets in the carbs . i have a set of trashed carbs with the smaller jets ,so seemed a quick enough swap. i went on a run the next week and under really steep pulls i tended to bog .seemed to be starving. i got out the old manual and did the homework that i should have to begin with and found that the reason that i was starving was that i had changed the jets inside the little cover on the side of the carb but i didnt change the air bleed jets in the throat of the carb. the change to smaller fuel jets without changing the air bleed jets left me with a way too lean mixture. so..... if you change the jets make sure you get the 8 changed not just the 4 . my truck runs absolutely great now.

ka,
I take mine to the state emissions garage, where they have been more than agreeable. First time my 712 did not pass, then I tweeked the carbs abit and leaned them out where it would pass. Every year since, they just write me a certificate without testing as they figure it does not rack up the miles.

I once threw a towel over the locker levers and said it was full time 4wd... no dyno test! It helps that the majority of emission stations are "uneducated" where a Pinz is concerned. It was a 710.
Since then I have insured both of my Pinzes as Antique/Collectable,which exempts them from emission testing here in Arizona. :D :D

Nope - Utah has tougher registration laws than even California. Instead of a rolling date to exempt a vehicle for emissions (like most states use), Utah has a set date. Pretty lame. Truck and Antique licence are not an option either. When I had to pass my trucks, I would just lean the carbs out using the mixture screws on the carbs and even mess with the timing some times. The truck ran like crap but passed. You defiantly need to find a shop that is willing to work with you.

Good Luck!

now that i've replaced the 140 jets with 125 jets (via advice of dennis) this thing runs way better! monday i'm headed up the pass to micaels712m's to get his aid in tuning this thing up. driving it legally registered should feel better, i expect.
