Hi Prof Pinz are You safe
Hope you and the Pinz aren't seeing the 117 degree temps around the fire. I got to talking to the Aussie kids at work and woke up and realized the fires are around you. Take care and keep both of you cool.
G'Day mate, thanks for the thought, but I'm OK.
Horror week here in Victoria, especially Saturday. Three days last week it was in the mid 40's and Saturday was the hottest day ever recorded here, 46+C ... 115F
As I live in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne I'm a fair way from the fires (about 20 minutes on the highway) but areas we go 4WDriving in have been devastated! ....The whole town of Marysville (where we have 4WDriven around for 30+ years) and with a population of around 600 has been totally destroyed; hard to believe....a number of other towns have suffered similar fates.
At the height of the situation, the fire was burning on a 280 km front and the death toll is nearing 200, although they are finding bodies, in burnt out cars and buildings all the time.
Not to make light of the situation and far less important than all the death and destruction that has been caused, but at least my LWB Haffy and 4X4 Pinny are still OK.
I keep them on a mates farm near Whittlesea (about 100km west of Marysville) and he evacuated lunch time Saturday with three fires closing in on him.....miraculously his place was not burnt when I spoke to him Sunday (6 houses/properties around him weren’t so lucky).
Currently all the 4WD Clubs are prepping up to assist in the cleanups although we won’t be able to go into the areas for some time yet.
It's a strange world, 46 one day...20C today, and I'm COLD!... I'm wearing a jumper and we have the heater on!

Peter, glad to here you and the trucks are safe. I've read in the news here that some of the fires were not only set, but re set. I sincerely hope they catch the responsible parties and as I read, "deal with them harshly".
What a complete and utterly senseless waste. Good luck to you and enjoy the break in the weather.
Cheers,
Andy

G'Day Andy, Thanks for that!
There's real anger in Aus at the moment over those that set the fires....admittedly only a few of the fires were meant to have been lit by people, but the problem is that many of the smaller fires "linked up" and created a firestorm....at times, it's said to have travelled at over 70 mph.
Part of the reason you can't get access into the areas at them moment (and even many of those that evacuated still aren't allowed back to their homes/ashes) is that virtually the whole fire area has been cordened off by police as a crime /murder scene.
When the Police catch them (and they reckon they will) I wouldn't like to be the one that had to guarantee their personal safety.
Others are directing there anger toward the conservationists and greenies.
In the past authorities have done regular fuel reduction burns, and back-burns, but with recent policies to close off forests, shut tracks etc, etc many are saying that the lack of access and huge ammounts of fuel / vegetation added to the situation.... all that fuel and this Summers heat made for perfect conditions for such fires.
In one way (and again I'm not trying to make light of the situation) as a result of the above, and once all the finger pointing etc has stopped and appropriate action have been taken, we may end up with better bush/track access than we have had for many years.
Overall, given this disaster, it's amazing the way people have helped each other, companies have donated food and clothing (as many people had nothing left other than what they were standing up in), banks have opened on Sundays so people can cash Government cheques (to pay for clothing and necessities) organisation are swinging into action to help clean up and rebuild etc, etc.
We have a LROCV Committee meeting tonight and we're getting a briefing from the CERT Co-Ordinator so I guess it won't be too long till we, and most other 4WD Clubs have a members in the areas helping as per with previous bushfires.
