Thanks Dennis, I,m settling in OK...The food is really great, bacon doesn,t come in slices!! you buy it in chunks and slice it yourself (that,s like before I was born and I,m 50 odd!) half the farms use horse and cart rather than tractor, all the fields are small strips scattered here and there and the farmers say the words Massey Ferguson with tear filled eyes as if talking about some kind minor God, they are the same about Perkins engines. The Pinzgauer is a real celebrity (especially when they see what it can do - even in this evil clag they call soil here) I,m a celeb, apparently I,m not just the first Westerner to settle here lately, but they have checked the records and I,m the first....Ever! (This really is eastern Poland) Nearest thing to a Pinz or a Mog here is the 'fleet' of 4 GAZ 66 ex Russian Military trucks used by a local gas/oil drilling company. Some little bits of America...the same company has a 90,s International 4x4 Truck circa 16 Ton size, a local Tipper truck/construction company has a 70,s Mack sitting forlorn in their yard, and I saw an 80,s American Ford Escort (lots of older cars here not seen on the roads of UK for 20 years) sitting in the supermarket car park (a real American market model - where did they get that? Germany perhaps) Well thats all for now. PS. They don,t just send for new parts...show them a burned out Pinzgauer starter motor and they will re-build it (like new) in a day (I had a problem with the Unimog they took the starter and 10 hours later brought back a 'New' starter...they didn,t send to Germany and there are no Unimog Dealers anywhere in Poland, the Mog now starts almost before the key turns and the cost...If I told you, you wouldn,t believe me!!! (£150 all in, including taking off the starter at the roadside at 11 oclock at night and sorting a fuel blockage that caused the starter burn out) Pinz pics to follow, but still have a small neglected farm to sort out, lots of conrete hard stand to build and a barn/workshop to bring into the last century let alone this one. Steve

Funny thing about the Slivovits!!! first shop I went into in our local bigger!!!! town sold 'Jim Beam' good Ole Kentucky throat oil and it is about 7 quid a bottle cheaper than in England. (My sister married a Kentuckian US Airforce guy back in the 70,s which is where I developed my liking for Jim Beam.) They all make their own 'Spiritus' here, it,s like poteen only you really have to water it down...I mean really...or you might just poison yourself!!! Steve

The only place I got really sh#$^t faced big time was in Poland, for my 34 birthday. I was staying at a motel outside Warsaw doing/running a mechanics course on Leyland trucks.
The motel has these chalets which were basically just A frame roofs with next to no walls.
I got "waylaid" by two unknown women as I staggered back to my room in an alcoholic haze--never did know who they (but must have been known to some of the students) were and the memory of that adventure (if you want to call it that) was equally blurred.
So I have a distinct reserve when it comes to things Polish!!
Cheers and best wishes
