On a recent trip I came across a 1973 712M. It has been sitting for 4 years under a carport. It has not been started. I am looking for idea's on how to get it running again. Could it be as simple as replacing the batteries, draining and replacing the gasoline, and changing the oil. Any hint or idea's on what might go wrong? This Pinzgauer is out of state so I am trying to decide if I want to tackle this.
Thanks

I can't speak specifically for a Pinz but in general I find that standing vehicles aren't anywhere near as bad as you might think providing the rubber bits and metal bits are ok.
Generally I find that you can use the old gas tank to blast the cobwebs out and then fill it with fresh fuel to clean it further. Obviously oil changes are good too.
I'd definitely go gentle with it for several miles to allow lubricants to move around having drained away from critical parts of the engine and drive train.

Wow. A garage-find Pinzgauer. Cool.
About a year ago, I had another local owner's truck in my shop. He'd taken it apart in '02, IIRC, for painting and had gotten stalled. It had been stored in various sheds and garages over the years, so mice had gotten into the engine area.
We disassembled the motor tin, and found that they had eaten a lot of the insulation from the alternator wiring harness, and packed the top of the motor area with insulation and seeds. I cleaned it all out as best as possible, and repaired the wiring problems. There was even debris in the oil cooler fins. I drained and replaced the engine oil, and the fuel tank. I'd be leery of trying to fire it with years old gasoline. I also replaced the batteries.
The engine fired almost immediately. But the funniest thing was that the mice had also filled the muffler with seeds and dog food. When It started, it was like a machine-gun firing dog food around the shop.
Best of luck with getting her back to life.

considering the miles/kilometers on our trucks when we got them and how old they are, I would think almost all of them have sat around for many years. Most of the ones I have seen seem to run just fine. Drain the fuel, change the oil, might consider a new fan belt and fire it up.

squirting oil into the spark plug hole before turning it over (without spark) will ensure the rings have lubrication

I wonder if it's my old 712? So Cal Pinz bought it from me 7 year(ish) ago and had resold it to someone in the San Diego area.
You can PM me with any info or pics... mine did have a few nice add-ons ( electronic speedo, tach, delay wipers..)
