The TD's at SAV.

When I went to test drive a Pinz at SAV I noticed they had a few beat up TD's, when I asked about them out of curiosity Sheri said they were for parts, but when I went to pick up my Pinz about a month later on August 9th they had a nicer condition one, though still pretty ragged. Recently I noticed they are advertising a TD for sale but with no pics currently, I assume that's the one. Anyhow I took a pic of it with my phone when I was there last and I'm curious to find out what everyone thinks it is. At first I assumed it's British, but then I thought maybe a US special forces one perhaps; anyway I still think maybe Brit, the tan paint is definitely not 686 carc, more ruddy, that's what really makes me think Brit. I also noticed it has shackle tie-downs on the hubs.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "TD"? It sort of looks like the newer version of the Pinz. If so, can they now be legally driven in the U.S.? I thought only the old ones could be brought in due to emissions and safety rules, which are waived in the case of antique vehicles. Just curious.

"TD" stands for Turbo-Diesel. TD versions replaced the gas versions in the early 80s.
There is some info about tan-colored "TDs" (and why they are in the US) under the "TurboD" section of this forum, threads named "Gov Liq 718s" or "US diesel 718s".
In Steyr-Puch's lineup, to keep it very simple, a 716 is the TD version of the 710 (which is the gas 4x4) and the 718 is the TD version of the 712 (gas 6x6). There are a lot more differences than just the engine, but I let you surf and search if you need more.
I hope this helps,

Thanks for the info GenevaPinz
Not that I'll ever own one - I'll bet they're a bit pricey.
But anything Pinz has my attention - I'll do some research just for info's sake.
