Differences between '72, '73, '74, 75, 76 Pinzgauers

Post by mm58 »

Howdy all, new member here and this is my first post. I'm in the market for a 710K, and I think I might have found a decent '76.
I was wondering though, if there were any differences worth noting between the year models from 72 to 76.
Did any of a certain year model come with features that were not featured in other years?
I there a model year that is generally considered "best"?

Thanks for any info,

Mike

From everything I've ever read, the Swiss Army Pinzgauers were built to a specification that did not change. Any upgrades like exec II diffs were also fitted to older trucks during overhauls so age is not always the way to judge the truck. Each vehicle should be judged on its own merits, condition and recent up-keep. I added recent up-keep because almost all Petrol Pinzgauers now will have had a life outside the military which may have had more of a bearing on their condition than their in-service life.

My 1976 710K came with less than 24 000 km from the Swiss army in 2005, but I have now more than doubled that in the 7 years I've had it.

the only real difference is in the resale value of the '74 and earlier units. The '75 and newer ones generally can't be sold in CA so you limit the market a little bit. Not a real big difference but it is there. As posted above it is more about the condition of the truck. Don't forget that there are a number of very knowledgeable owners around that can help you look at a truck. If it is in the right area there are even some pinz mechanics in some areas that can look at it with you.

There were very SLIGHT design changes but nothing of consequence. A little more difference if you were comparing a 1971 and say a 1979 or 1980, but again nothing major. As mentioned go off the individual trucks own merits. Also as mentioned take someone with knowledge and or make sure to do your research and check the truck very carefully.

Had a 710K that had just been purchased come through earlier this month. It was a great deal.....up until the bill for a new propshaft, a rebuilt transmission, tie rod ends, stabilizer, etc. The deal went from great to you've just been raped in about 1 hour of inspection. Next "revision" will include dealing with all the seal leaks and brake system. A thorough inspection is ESPECIALLY crucial if you do not intend on doing your own maintenance and repair. Repairing a brake system is not that bad of a task monetarily if you are only having to cover parts, it will add up if you are paying a repair shop to do all the work.

Good luck with the purchase.

Also depending on your location you may find yourself needing to have the truck transported further than you expect to a competent mechanic that is already knowledgeable or is willing to learn (at your expense) about Pinzgauers.

Please add your location to your profile it makes a difference for some answers.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to look at this '76 tomorrow. I've only seen pics so far, but it looks fairly nice.
I also plan to actually use it as a radio truck (HAM) part time. Maybe also part time as a camper/sleeper.
