Where do the parts come from?

Post by JimmyC »

I am wondering where the Pinz parts come from. Are they still made by SDP or BAE? Are they NOS sold off military surplus?

A variety of places. Some are new stock from the current iteration of SDP, some are nos, some from the oem manufacturer. I think both Willy at SAV and Scott at EI bought large quantities in the past when the Swiss and others liquidated their spare stock.

It is a very unique parts situation and one of the first times I have experienced going head to head with the Factory at military spare parts auctions where they were buying back their own parts! Very Recently this scenario actually happened. Who do you think has a bigger bankroll? :)

When you analyze this it can be taken a couple of different ways.

#1 - This sucks. Small guys can't compete with the big money of Magna.
#2 - This sucks. Factory fresh now may mean New Old Stock Surplus.
#3 - This is awesome. It shows the factory is interested in long term support of the Pinzgauer and is willing to invest significantly in that.
#4 - Yet to be seen, this may actually be a plus for the consumer. NOS CARBS, are back available. Some parts that have been obsoleted, are know coming back available.

I honestly think the long term parts support is very good. Numerous worldwide vendors. Factory support, OEM support, Vendors making new parts, aftermarket development being done by a number of entities. For a vehicle with less than 20K pieces over a 14+ time period (gas units) this is great. I have a harder time getting parts for my 2007 Dodge Cummins which just spent 8 weeks down waiting on FACTORY parts and computer troubleshooting, than I do for a 1970's archaic, European, military vehicle!

That being said, there will be parts that are difficult to come by. I have a little drawer "scotts stuff" in my parts system. Thats where I keep a few spares just for myself. Original Yellow Boots, Bosch Point Sets with Adjusting Concentrics, Dash Idiot light Assembly, etc. My prized pair of NOS Carbs, just became common when a whole batch of Carbs popped on the market. The fun of a hobby.......

Cheers,
