Hafi Heavy Cleaning - lots of photos

So every time I go to work on some thing 2-3+ new jobs come up and so now my Hafi is in many pieces and the Engine is semi disassembled (tin, manifolds and dyna etc).
So I figure I may as well start a thread to post pictures and progress as I go so it is all in one place.
I am no mechanic and no where near a body guy, this will just document things as I go.
The end goal is to have a mechanically solid Hafi (pretty much there thanks to all the work Jim L did to it after I purchased it (minor engine work, rebuilt tranny, rebuilt brakes etc etc) and one that looks original but still used (not used as in 1970's 'old' (that is what it looks like now ) but just like it gets used for what it was meant to be used for but is only a few years old (not sure that makes any sense ).
It will not be a frame off restoration or anything close to that but just a heavy cleaning so I can hopefully get it back on the road and useable as soon as possible.
Here is what I worked on today:
Hard to see the 1/4"+ thick mud and oil all over the tin!

Looks good so far and I look forward to seeing the progress. My recommendation is to protect your tin, take it in to a powder coat shop, have them blast it, then go back and check for any hairline cracks that may have formed over the past 40+ years and repair if necessary. then have it powder all coated before you put the new decals on. I have been very happy with mine.

That is a good idea - last time I talked to, what seems like the only powder coater here in Toronto, he tried to rip me off but I will check and see.

Powder coating at home isn't too hard, tools and powder from Eastwood or Harbor freight and an oven from a kitchen remodel and you have the basics. For small items you can use a toaster oven. Please note only use the ovens in your kitchen if your single and want to stay that way.

Wow the engine is nasty!
Still not done - I feel like once I fire it up oil is going to spray from every seal - not sure how so much oil got all over it!!
As for powder coating: thought about the Eastwood home kit but I may just spray tin with a 2 part black semi-gloss.

At least you will be able to find the leaks now!

What are you using to clean it?
I'm doing the same thing, but mine is so junked up I have a mind to attack it with brake cleaner/carb cleaner just to get some of the crud off..
I have been scrubbing with a brass "toothbrush" and all I do is spend dime trying to clean the crap out of the brush.
Simple Green ain't cutting it.

For the tin I soaked it in parts cleaner
For engine and other parts I can't submerge I started with a plastic scraper, then moved to a stiff nylon brush and shop vac (all the big thick stuff), then a brass brush and various tooth brushes (filed down to different sizes) and a pile of rags.
To clean, I sealed everything that I did not want cleaner to get on or in and I used Eastwoods PRE cleaner - similar to brake cleaner but it leaves no residue.
It is good you are doing yours too - as I am sure I will forget how to put mine back together

At least you haven't run into the pockets of bird seed and mouse poo I have.
Mine was so dirty, I couldn't figure out how to remove some of the tin, because the screws were hidden by all the dirt and crap.

I'm going slower than you.. so maybe we can use each-others rigs as reference for reassembly.
I'm at the point where I going to seal and blast my motor with some XXX Global Thermonuclear Cleaner and get it over with.

I have a big bag'o'seals from SAV that need installation, sine mine was super leaky before I pulled it (around the left cover and on the oil backflow pipe)

Remember, use lots of marked zip-lock bags to separate and identify parts along with lots of photos. I use an older digital camera for the shop so I don’t have to worry about getting it greasy.

Yeah - I have lots of pictures, mini zip locks and 3 storage compartments all labeled up.
For electrical I always do a drawing as well - seems to help job my memory

Here's my '64 Haflinger platform after I had it sandblasted completely, just 3 years ago. I figured if I'm going to do it once I might as well do it right. The old paint did not come off very easy!

I've had 2 Pinzies blasted and both times,(2 different places) they under bid them not knowing the coatings. Looking forward to having my Haffy done as I have scratched thru at least 5 layers of paint, two of the colors were pink and white! Maybe a prior owner was a member of a Circus!
