Different Technique!

Post by Profpinz »

Every year the LROCV (Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria - Australia) put on a 4WD Show that is open to the general public.
As a Sub-Committee member I'm in charge of the Demonstration area, in which we talk about winching, recovery equipment and various aspect of 4WDriving throughout the day.
We set up the Demo area on the Saturday (the Show is on the Sunday) and we begin be digging two deep holes that "swallow" diagonal wheels on LR Discoveries and Defenders, to the degree that they lift wheels.
Naturally after digging the holes we all have a "play" and I thought it was interesting to see the difference between the way a Disco/Defender and a Pinzgauer tackle the "holes".
Whilst the Pinny doesn't have the articulation that the LR's do, the rear wheel setup on the 712 simply allow the vehicle to "bridge" most of the holes and make the display look far less spectacular than the LR's.

It's an interesting comparison!

No, there is only around 22 Pinzgauers in Australia (a country roughly the size of the US) so getting one in any location is amazing, getting two is a miracle! ..... and besides, of that 22, only two are 4X4's (I own one of them)

Personally I would be cautious about putting a 4X4 Pinny in that situation.
Wheel travel isn't the Pinzgauers strong point and for that reason "cross-articulation" is something I try to avoid..... especially if you only have four wheels and a short wheelbase.

And I thought that is what makes driving my 710 so much more fun than my 712. Really a blast when the truck rocks back and forth as it goes through the cross articulated obstacles.

Agreed, obstacles that were fun and a challenge in my 710 were boring in my 712. 712 is definetely more capable, but the 710 is more exciting in most situations.
