Yes, the 710k does have a tail gate or back door and that pin goes into the lock. You would be well served by a parts book. I looked it up for you. I believe it is part 28-05-02.

Bled the lockers today and got them all working as they should. Nasty, dark, lumpy fluid all gone, replaced with new DOT 3. Replacement rubber elbows/lines on order.

Looking a little more put together. Mounted 2 ram balls for mounting a camera and my gps map display. I need to invest in an I pod mini to display onx offroad. Another clamp on mount is currently holding my GMRS radio. I added a pic from rebuilding the locker cylinders. Surprisingly, they were still working with all the junk inside.

Here's how I set up the phone holder, dashcam, and GPS mount. And tach.
I find keeping things up higher helps with keeping focus outside.
The GPS mount is a suction cup to the windshield, but also secures on top of the wiper motor.
The phone mount is also suction cup to the windshield, but also with a support bracket to the top of the dashboard assembly.

Got the VDO fuel gauge installed and working. I metered in 10 gal of fuel and watched the reading change. I estimate +- 13 to 14 gal of fuel total in the tank at this point. I will fill it up at some point and calibrate the high side. Also removed the old hour meter, not sure if I want an oil temp or just blank it off.

There were two types of fuel sending units used on the Pinz.
One with just the usual sliding resistor the other with the slider and
a contact point at the bottom of the sender which is brought out at
the top with a second terminal. This can be used to turn on an idiot
light when truly at the bottom of the sender. Since the senders are
hung above the bottom of the tank "R" or "E" indication means your
are on reserve ~5 more gallons remain. So that idiot light is very useful
if you have that terminal for positive confirmation.
On dash metering, you could plug that hole with a nice RPM meter or
Oil pressure, there is a VDO sender with both linear pressure and
pressure warning so the idiot light can still with with absolute pressure.
Senders with Temp and pressure warning are rare to non existent.

My sender is marked with "G" and "W". I used the "G" as the signal to the gauge and thought the "W" may be a ground, although the gauge reads with it disconnected. Could the "W" be the 5-gal warning lead? And if so, where is the warning light normally located?
As for the gauge, I think a plug will do for now. I drove VW's for years in the desert with no need for anything but the pressure warning light. A tack might be nice, but my ignition is still the old sealed military system, so it can wait until I convert to electronic in the future.

so there is no warning light on the dash. You would have to add one. Either a
24V bulb or LED through a ~3 K Ohm 1/2W resistor. Advantage of LED is a

This dang warning light caused me to carry 2 full Jerry cans
